During the month of Ramadan, Muslims worldwide embark on a journey of spiritual devotion and self-discipline through fasting.

As they observe this auspicious period, American Mission Hospital (AMH) clinical dietician, Abigail Carolin David, underscores the importance of fasting while upholding healthy habits.

Ramadan serves as a time for profound reflection and reverence, a time to honour the revelation of the Quran and seek spiritual rejuvenation.

This act of religious duty is also an opportunity for individuals to deepen their connection with their faith and community.

Against this backdrop, Ms David underscores the necessity of mindfulness in fasting practices. While refraining from food and drink from dawn until sunset, individuals must remain mindful of their dietary choices and habits.

Neglecting healthy routines or overindulgence can jeopardise not only physical wellbeing but also the spiritual essence of fasting.

“Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection and commitment to noble values,” Ms David remarks.

“It is imperative to embody these values not only in prayer but also in everyday actions, including dietary practices.”

Ms David stresses the need to incorporate a diverse range of nutritious foods into meals during Ramadan to promote overall health and well-being.

This includes dates, providing natural sugars and essential minerals; whole grains such as brown rice and quinoa for sustained energy; lean proteins like grilled chicken and legumes for muscle maintenance; an assortment of vegetables for vital nutrients and antioxidants; and healthy fats from sources like avocados and olive oil for heart health.

Moreover, hydration is crucial during the fasting period. It is recommended to drink plenty of water and consume foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and soups during non-fasting hours to maintain optimal hydration levels.

By embracing these dietary principles and adopting mindful eating habits during Ramadan, individuals can nourish their bodies while honouring their spiritual commitments.
